HTML : HYPER TEXT MARKUP LANGUAGE 
In the Beginning.......

is the official language of the World Wide Web and was first conceived in 1990. HTML is a product of SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language) which is a complex, technical specification describing markup languages to link documents electronically using hyperlinks. 

Thus the name Hypertext Markup Language

 In fact, Netscape was the first browser to support Javascript, animated gifs and HTML frames.

A side effect of all this competition was that HTML became fragmented and web authors soon found that their web pages looked fine in one browser but not in another.

Thus the birth of 

HTML 2.0 in September 1995 

HTML 3.2 in January 1997

HTML 4.01 in   December 1999
